2023 Classic Champion: Troy Duff
THE START OF THE SEASON WAS A TOUGH ONE....WINDS WERE 25 MPH OUT OF THE WEST. The club set out of Tydings and battled the elements with just about every angler catching shorts in the murky Susquehanna. Troy brought out a win with 2 bass that tallied 5 lbs 11 oz and John brought a single bass to the scales that went 2 lbs 3 oz. Troy is off with an early lead.
Joe Montoya wins on the Potomac in 2023 with an impressive 12 lbs 6 oz on a limit of 3 bass. Troy takes 2nd with 9 lbs 15 with a big kicker of 6 lbs 11 ox that will likely hold out for Lunker of the year unless a seriously big bass is brought in to the scales this year.. Dave took 3rd today with 7.02 lbs and Ken Eng tipped the scales at 6 lbs 11 oz. John came in with a bass that went 2 lbs 3 oz for 5th today.
THE TRIP: Thursday and Friday were great. Lots of good bass were caught andwe had a great time on the water. Most fish came from grass. Saturday was spent just running around a little for some and looking for a backup location to fish.
The location of this tourny moves to Joppatowne due to an 80 boat field out of Tydings and an all-day rain event that started with wind, and a threat of more wind and storms. There was a very good weigh-in considering that we also ended up fishing a FLOOD tide due to conditions. John came in first with 9 lbs 11 oz on a limit of 3 bass. Kevin ended up with the Lunker of 4 lbs 10 oz and he also took 2n place with 6 lbs 1 oz on 2 fish. This barely edged-out Joe Montoya with 3 fish for 6.07. Dave brought 2 to the scales for 5 lbs 10 oz just ahead of Troy's 4 lbs 10 oz weight on 2 bass. After that it was Brian and Joe Williams with a single bass just over 2 lbs each. Honorable mention today for Ben Duff. Ben fished with his dad troy today and bested pops by an ounce with 4 lbs 11 oz on two keeper bass. Ben, along with several others, caught multiple 14 inch bass today. Ben reports a nice snakehead and catfish today as well!
Today the club went out with a shortened line-up. Brian and John went solo. John came in with a stringer of 3 bass that went 7 1//2 pounds on 3 bass. His kicker went 3.02 lbs and he finished 4th. Troy took Timmy with him today and troy took 3rd today with 8 pounds even and a 2.15 kicker, Joe and Dave got some nice bass. Dave took 2nd today with 9 lbs 7 oz and his kicker went 3.12. Joe wins on the susky today with a nice 10.12 bag of 3 bass and he took lunker with a 4 1/2 pounder, Lots of fishing pressure today.
5 anglers came to the scales on a tough day of fishing. Matt and Joe Williams came to the scales with a limit today with bags over 8 Lbs. Ken, Joe M., and John came in with one fish each to round out the weigh-in.
Number 6 turned out to be our wildcard and team tournament all in one. Ken and Joe W won the event with 15.10 lbs. Dave and Brian came in second and everyone else came in third.
The rest of the season saw the battle for Mr Bass tighten between Troy, Dave, Joe, Ken, and John. Dave, Troy, and Ken really poured it on over the last 3 tournaments and by the time the classic came around, All 5 anglers were within 8 points of the lead with Troy and Dave at the top only 2 points away. Both Ken and Dave had BIG wins on the Northeast and Troy finished in the top 3 on a regular basis.
The 2023 Classic was one for the ages. In the end, Troy Duff edged-out Joe Montoya by just a single ounce. It would all come down to which angler could execute his plan the best. Troy and Joe clearly had a great plan and they stuck to the plan and Troy came to the scales with 11 lbs 01 oz on 3 bass with a 4 pound kicker. Joe Montoya tipped the scales at 11 pounds even and had a 4.02 bass of his own. Third today went to Kevin B with a nice 10 lb 12 oz bag of bass and the tournament lunker of 4 .08 lbs. 4th went to Dave and 5th to John with bags over 8 lbs on 3 fish. Everyone came in with fish today, and most caught a good number of bass. There were many 12 and 13 inch bass caught today which in one way is good to see, but today it didn't help at the scales.
